Cow herd

The Sandy Knoll Farm cow herd is the foundation of our program. Our registered Gelbvieh and Balancer females are selected first for functionality. Structural soundness, udder quality, fertility, disposition, and moderation are non-negotiable traits that determine longevity and efficiency in our herd. Cows must earn their place. Females that fail to breed back, maintain condition, or meet our structural standards are culled. This disciplined selection process has built a cow herd recognized for maternal strength, longevity, and adaptability across diverse environments. Today, our program consistently achieves a 98% conception rate, reflecting the strength of our fertility-focused selection and management.

We utilize artificial insemination extensively, incorporating proven Gelbvieh, Balancer, Angus, and Red Angus genetics to strategically complement our cow base. The result is a balanced, maternally driven herd that consistently produces hardy, performance-oriented calves year after year.

Leon’s years in the swine industry, along with Brian’s experience in livestock selection, have strongly influenced our breeding philosophy. Both have seen firsthand the value of using indexes to guide selection and breeding decisions, and how quickly measurable genetic progress can be achieved through a balanced, data-driven approach. They carried that same principle into the beef cow herd by utilizing tools such as the $Profit indexes as part of their internal evaluation process. We are $Profit Share customers, using $Profit, $Ranch, and $Feeder internally to guide selection, mating decisions, and herd improvement. Rather than focusing on a single trait, these indexes help guide balanced selection decisions that improve all economically relevant traits together.
